The Ledger of Iron
Introduction
The Blithewater River churned with a dark and hungry temperament, its icy currents gnashing against the moss-slicked stones of the riverbank like teeth seeking to drag the world into the abyss. On the southern shore, the party stood under a sky bruised purple and charcoal, their breath blooming in the frigid air like ghostly sighs of resignation. Before them sat Fortune's Crossing, a jagged jewel of stone and timber perched precariously upon an island in the river’s throat, and beyond it, the horizon flickered with the malevolent, rhythmic pulse of a dozen dragonborn campfires. Those distant embers acted as beacons of impending ruin, casting long, dancing shadows across the water that seemed to promise nothing but the total erasure of all that had been built there. The weight of the package in their possession was not merely physical, though it pressed against their tired bodies like a leaden anchor; it felt as though they were carrying the entire legacy of the Duke of Hartford, a testament of shifting alliances and desperate secrets that demanded delivery before the coming fire consumed the island. Ultio felt the familiar, biting cold of his deity, Hoar, seeping into his very marrow, grounding his panic into a rigid, icy resolve. He stood apart from the others, his knuckles white as he gripped his halberd, his eyes tracing the swirling eddies of the river until the world abruptly tilted on its axis.
In the span of a single, agonizing heartbeat, the rushing wind fell into a tomb-like silence. A spectral silver raven, luminous and sharp as a honed blade, plummeted from the roiling clouds to settle upon Ultio's shoulder with the weight of a falling star. The bird did not ruffle its feathers, but leaned in close, its beak grazing the shell of his ear as it spoke in a voice that sounded like grinding tectonic plates and shattered glass. "The ledger is open", it rasped, the words echoing within the hollow chambers of Ultio's skull with a terrifying finality that left him trembling, "The debt is due."
Ultio blinked, the vision vanishing as quickly as it had arrived, leaving behind only the cold spray of the river and the oppressive tension of his companions. He turned to the group, his expression a mask of grim piety, and looked toward the looming fires of the north with the eyes of a man who understood that their mission was no longer a matter of politics or gold, but a reckoning ordained by the gods. We go forward, he declared, his voice thick with the gravity of his revelation, for we are not merely crossing a river to deliver a parcel, but walking willingly into the maw of a balance that must be restored, and though the path is paved with the impending ashes of this city, we shall not turn back until the final entry is written in the blood of those who owe the gods their due.
