Escorting Vondal to Fortune's Crossing

Introduction

The forge-fires of Goodfalls roar with a fervor that singes the very air, and thou dost watch as Kizalla deftly hammers the Kragmore Shield into existence. Sparks shower down like dying stars upon the stone floor, reflecting in the sweat upon her brow until at last, the steel sings with a resonant, infernal chime. Thou dost witness the shield pass into the grip of Kaelen, its weight a promise of protection against the encroaching shadow, for it feels cold and resolute, as if etched with the iron will of the mountains themselves.

With the heavy shield secured, thy company turns its gaze toward the stone-walled town of Hartford. The scent of ozone and damp earth clings to thy cloaks as thou dost retrieve the shackled slaver, Vondal, whose eyes burn with a viperous, quiet malice. He is a man of broken oaths and bitter spite, his movements hampered by the heavy manacles that chafe his wrists. Thou must lead this wretch across seven days of shifting wilderness and uncertain hillsides, knowing full well that in the distance Fortune Crossing is under constant threat of the merciless banner of the Ironhold.

As the miles unfurl before thy feet, the air grows thick with the copper tang of distant war. Thou shalt find that the wilderness does not offer peace, for the silence of the woods is punctuated by the rhythmic scraping of Vondal’s chains, a sound that surely calls to the predators lurking in the deep brush. What horrors might rise to meet thee when the moon hangs thin and pale? Perhaps the slaver’s kin track thy passage, or maybe the corruption of the Bane-worshippers reaches out to twist the very beasts of the forest into instruments of thy demise.

Thou dost press onward, thy hand never straying far from thy hilt, for the shadows that stretch from the pines appear to possess a life of their own. Each night, as thou dost huddle by the flickering embers of a dying fire, thou must peer into the darkness and wonder if Vondal is a prisoner or a lure for a far greater trap. The road to Fortune Crossing is long, and thou shalt learn that the greatest peril is not merely the siege ahead, but the treachery that breathes down thy neck with every step thou dost take.
